The gradation in three dimensions:

Variation of a pair of angles - that are indicated by respective dots in each diagram-. The values of such angles are increasing from left to right in the following picture: π/8 [22.5 °] in the left, arctan(1/2) [almost 26.6 °] in the middle, and arctan(5/8) [almost equal to 32.0 °] in the right.
The number of subdivisions by the iterative folding modules on the parallelogram areas that are defined on squares of respective diagrams: these are 4, 8, and 16 subdivisions from top to bottom in the following picture.
The third dimension is coloring, as you see.
